Wenger still expecting big personnel changes at Arsenal before the summer window slams shut

The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are still celebrating their side’s victory over Chelsea on Sunday…

It was a tight game and it lacked the quality that is often seen in the Premier League, but that will be forgiven given that it still falls within the realms of a pre-season fixture.

The key takeaway for the Gunners was that their side looked very strong, whilst the substitutions that Arsene Wenger made also proved that the London side have a lot of strength in depth.

Indeed, Arsene Wenger fears that his side actually has too much strength in depth, and quotes from the Frenchman after the game seem to suggest that more than a few players could depart the club this summer. According to the Telegraph, he said: “To be honest, the number [of players] is too high…We will let some players go. Too much competition for places is detrimental”.

This is, of course, in contrast to Chelsea – who had a bench made up of mostly teenagers on Sunday afternoon.

With players like Alexandre Lacazette and Sead Kolasinac coming in, it’s only¬†logical that a couple of players will have to make way as a result – particularly with the lack of Champions League action at the Emirates next season.

Landlord’s Verdict

Arsenal’s squad is certainly sizeable, and so it makes sense to cut it down somewhat.

It is important that Wenger finds a balance here, though, as too much change within the squad could negatively affect it, whilst not enough will undoubtedly leave some players feeling frustrated about a lack of game time.

Selling players is just as important as buying players when it comes to squad management, and it’s clear that Wenger has a lot of hard work still to do.

Still, with a lot of young players in the squad, a few loan deals will serve to reduce the size of the squad dramatically.
