Wenger takes firm stance on 28-year-old as Arsenal look to improve next season

The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for their side to keep Alexis Sanchez this summer…

It seems that Arsene Wenger is too, with the Frenchman recently revealing via Sky Sports that the Chilean will be an Arsenal player next season. He said: “The decision has been made and we will stick to that…The decision is not to sell”.

Alexis Sanchez’s future has been uncertain for quite some time, with the Chilean having just one year to run on his current deal at the Emirates. Given his significance in the Arsenal first team, it is no real surprise that Wenger wants to hold on to him, but it is certainly a risky strategy.

There doesn’t appear to have been much progress regarding talks over a new deal, and so there is a genuine risk that he could look to leave the club on a free next summer.

Clearly, though, Wenger values his contributions to the first team above monetary gain, and you can certainly see why that is the case. Last season was an awful one for the Gunners, and their failure to finish in the top four certainly proves that. Whichever way you spin it, Arsenal’s chances of returning to the top four will be made better with Sanchez in the team, though whether it’s worth losing him on a free for that reason remains to be seen.

The Arsenal fans, though, are pretty happy that he will stay at Arsenal – leaving at least a slim chance that he could look to sign on for an extended period.
