It’s been a tough spell at the Emirates for Calum Chambers since moving to Arsenal…
Signed from Southampton, he initially impressed, but he has spent the last year or so treading water.
An impressive campaign for Middlesbrough last term proved that he’s good enough to play in the Premier League, but question marks over his future have remained this summer.
Indeed, with Arsenal gunning for the Premier League title, it remained unclear whether Chambers would be given a fair go of it this season – but now those question marks have been answered.
According to the Mirror, Arsene Wenger wants the 22-year-old to stay at Arsenal this summer and to play for the club – with the recent sale of Gabriel opening up a spot for the Englishman in the first team.
It’s no less than he deserves having impressed last term, and now he needs to back up the faith with good performances. At 22-years-old, he really needs to start kicking on and impressing – and a role in the Gunners’ first team will provide the perfect foundations for that process.
Chambers, on his day, is a top player – but one issue that he has had in recent years comes down to a lack of consistency. At Middlesbrough last term, though, he showed signs of improving on that – and he needs to continue in that vein this season.
How much of a chance he will get remains to be seen, but with so many competitions to fight for, it seems likely that he will get fairly regular game time.
Time to kick on.
