Arsene Wenger has moved to secure Brazilian left-back Andre Dos Santos from Fenerbahce. The Arsenal boss has splashed out £6.2m to sign the 22 times capped Brazilian international.
The news comes amidst strong rumours that Sunday’s left0back Armand Traore will be allowed to join QPR.
Of all the painful negatives to take out of Arsenal’s humiliating defeat to Manchester United, the most blatantly obvious was that Arsenal’s defence had become not only their weakness, but a source of complete embarrassment on an unprecedented scale.
Relying so heavily on youth and playing players out of position has made Arsenal look weak and amateurish throughout their poor start to the season.
After losing left-back Gael Clichy to league rivals Manchester City, it seemed clear to all that Wenger required a replacement of at least equal quality. After weeks of reluctance, and a quite worrying insistence that youngster Kieran Gibbs was the man for the job, it now looks as if Wenger has finally seen the light of day.
The deal represents a good bit of business for Arsenal as they are getting Dos Santos even cheaper than Fenerbahce bought him for just two years previously. And though the Brazilian’s time there was largely successful, the grim future awaiting the disgraced Turkish champions makes a move to the Premiership an even more attractive prospect for the player.
Arsenal fans will be hoping this is merely the first of a number of new faces Arsene Wenger will bring between now and the end of the transfer window.
