The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are relieved that the Alexis Sanchez transfer saga has finally come to an end.
Although the Gunners propping up the bar in the Tavern are bitterly disappointed that they lost their crown jewel to a Premier League rival, they are eager to move on and put the entire saga behind them. Speculation regarding the Chile international’s future has persisted since the summer transfer window of 2017 when Manchester City were hot-favourites to land his signature and doubts over his future have undoubtedly provided an unwanted distraction for Arsene Wenger and the Arsenal players.
Wenger himself has even admitted to The Guardian that Sanchez’s future contributed to a decline in the overall morale amongst the players during the first-half of the season.
Now that his future has been resolved, Wenger will be hoping to see an improvement in the mood of the Arsenal camp, but the future of Mesut Ozil could prove to be detrimental to that expectation.
Although speculation concerning Ozil’s future has taken a back-seat to Sanchez in recent weeks, Wenger should expect the German’s next career-move to reemerge as a hot-topic in the British media following the confirmation of Sanchez’s departure.
With that being said, it is crucial that Wenger and Ozil come to some form of agreement whether it be to extend his contract or confirm that he will leave in the summer.
Based on what Wenger has already said, it was the lack of clarity that upset the morale within the squad during the first-half of the season, so he must ensure that there are no further distractions during the second-half by forcing Ozil to make a decision on his future by the end of the January window.
