‘We’re better than this’ – Tottenham Hotspur fans on Twitter not happy with big money rumour

The Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern have been reacting to a story in the Daily Express that claims Mauricio Pochettinio is eying up a £65 million double-swoop for Swansea’s Alfie Mawson and Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand. It’s been well documented that Spurs are in the market for a left-back and another centre-back as both Danny Rose and Toby Alderweireld are set to leave the club.

The Spurs fans propping our bar up really aren’t convinced with Mawson and Bertrand though. The club has been linked with a number of defensive targets, and the fans would much rather see the likes of Matthijs De Ligt and Ryan Sessegnon come to the club. However, with money not at a premium given the club’s move to a new stadium, the fans could be left in the ‘beggars can’t be choosers’ position as the club continues to line up replacements for their current defensive stars.

Mawson and Bertrand are both competent defenders who have been the standout performers in their club’s backlines this season. That, however, doesn’t detract from the fact that Swansea and Southampton are 17th and 18th in the Premier League, leading the fans to believe that Daniel Levy and co at Spurs aren’t looking at prestigious enough options. The fans will trust Mauricio Pochettino with whoever he decides to recruit this summer, with the Argentine proving the fans wrong on occasions in the past. Everyone in N17 will hope this is just another example.
