Newcastle’s transfer window was one of frustration for the fans as the club failed to invest heavily in a squad that somehow managed to 10th in the league.
Last season Rafa Benitez worked wonders to get Newcastle into the top 10 and rightly would’ve expected to have some reinvestment in the squad this summer.
However, under Mike Ashley, the Magpies brought in cheap signing after cheap signing, the most expensive being Yoshinori Muto for £9.63 million from Mainz.
Also, up front, the club brought in West Brom striker, Salomon Rondon on a loan for the season.
The Chronicle Live is now reporting that West Brom have triggered a 12-month contract extension in Rondon’s contract which would now mean that Newcastle must negotiate a fee for the player at the end of the season.
Initially, Rondon’s contract was due to run out at the end of the season which would give Newcastle a chance to sign him on a free – something that might attract Mike Ashley.
Newcastle had been linked with a move for Rondon earlier in the transfer window but failed to negotiate a move before his release clause expired and were forced to take the next option of a loan.
While this was probably expected by many Newcastle fans, it’s only going to add another reason to Rafa Benitez’s anger at the transfer dealings of the club.
Moreover, any deal for Rondon may yet depend on whether Benitez stays until next season.
So Newcastle fans, what do you think about this?
