This is sure to be an unpopular move with the Southampton faithful here in the Football Transfer Tavern, with Claude Puel surely keen to get this fan-favourite some game-time away from St Mary’s this season.
It has not been a very good few years for Southampton star Jay Rodriguez.
After a hugely impressive 2013/14 season, Rodriguez was touted for a spot in the England side for the 2014 World Cup by the punters here in the Tavern, before a knee injury ruled the Southampton ace out for at least six months – forcing him to miss out on a trip to Brazil.
What was touted as six months on the sidelines quickly turned into a 15 month injury lay-off, with the English forward eventually making his Southampton return 459 days after the initial injury, scoring a brace in a European clash on the 8th of July 2015.
Things then got worse for the attacker, with several other injuries during the 2015/16 season limiting his involvement for Southampton throughout the campaign.
When it was all said and done, Jay Rodriguez had made just three starts for Southampton between his injury in 2014 and the end of the 2015/16 season.
Fast forward to 2016 and our landlord thinks that Rodriguez is past the worst of his injuries and could really get back to his best this season.
Unfortunately for the Southampton fans here in the Tavern; his future does not look set to be at St Mary’s, at least on a short-term basis.
According to Sky Sports, Rodriguez may well be loaned to West Brom as he continues his return to fitness, with Claude Puel keen to ensure that the English attacker can get some regular game time under his belt.
The issue amongst the West Brom faithful here in the Football Transfer Tavern is that they aren’t sure what they will be getting out of Rodriguez given how long he has been on the sidelines for.
Whilst it may be hard to justify a loan deal for Jay Rodriguez on recent memory, with the help of Whoscored.com – West Brom fans may get a better idea of who exactly they are signing using this handy little table.
Immediately obvious are Rodriguez’ stats from the 2013/14 season, where the English forward managed to bag an impressive 15 goals in just 30 starts for Southampton.
That sort of goal tally could be the difference between a relegation fight and a comfortable Premier League stay for Tony Pulis’ side.
If the West Brom faithful in the Tavern need any more convincing; how about this compilation video from the same season?
Jay Rodriguez has been really unlucky with injuries over the last few years, but we think our landlord is right. If he truly is past the worst of his injuries, he could be an absolute coup for West Brom this season!
West Brom fans – are you convinced? Are you a fan of this deal? Southampton fans – disappointed? Does he really need to go on loan?
