It’s been a mixed start for the Baggies upon their return to playing Championship football. A last minute loss to Middlesbrough will have cut deep, as Darren Moore looks to figure out how to make his side challenge for an immediate return to the Premier League this term.
After a very poor last season, particularly the spell under Alan Pardew, Baggies fans will have been hoping for a real upturn in their fortunes this season. Darren Moore did a good job at the end of last season, despite the fact the Hawthorns outfit were still relegated in 20th place, and it looked the signs were there for a good season this term. The Albion board will certainly be hoping for an immediate return to the lucrative Premier League, and all the riches that a place in the top-flight brings with it.
One player who has the potential to really cost the Baggies promotion this season is Dwight Gayle, who is rated as being worth £9m by Transfermarkt. He was signed in a deal which saw Salomon Rondon go in the opposite direction, joining Newcastle United. Gayle opened his account the club during the 7-1 mauling of Queens Park Rangers, scoring in the 67th minute. The striker has pace and a good finish, and does have the capacity to be a real menace to Championship defences.
If Gayle does turn out to be the lethal Championship goal-scorer the West Midlands outfit are hoping for, this could prove an excellent piece of business for the Throstles. However, if he fails to get a run of form together, and Darren Moore is rather pinning his hopes on him, it could cost the club promotion to the Premier League, considering his injury record.
The games come thick and fast in the second tier and Gayle certainly couldn’t deal with all too many in a week during his last stint there, so pinning all your hopes on a man with that kind of record may not be the smartest idea.
