Gayle for Rondon would be great business for West Brom

Gayle for Rondon would be great business for West Brom

According to the Daily Mail, West Brom and Newcastle United are discussing a player swap deal that would see Salomon Rondon and Dwight Gayle exchange places between the clubs.

Newcastle’s interest in signing Rondon this summer has been no secret for a while now, yet negotiations with West Brom had appeared to have reached an impasse.

A swap deal, that would see Rondon depart the Baggies, as Gayle arrives at the Hawthorns to take his place, could be the way forward that sees everyone come out happy.

Darren Moore can’t afford to lose any more members of his first team squad this summer without replacements being sourced immediately, so a swap deal would work for him.

In fact, this whole deal could work out better for West Brom than it might for Newcastle.

The Breakdown

Rondon was West Brom’s joint top scorer last season with 7 Premier League strikes, but that wasn’t enough to prevent his side getting relegated. Meanwhile, Gayle found the net 6 times for the Magpies as Rafa Benitez masterminded his side to an impressive 10th placed finish.

Newcastle are after a target man, and Rondon fits the bill there. The Venezuelan is also probably a superior finisher to Gayle, but he is not going to take Newcastle to the next level, and there are better options for them out there.

Gayle’s arrival at the Hawthorns would be great news for Baggies fans though. The 28-year-old has already proven himself capable of being prolific in the second tier, having netted 23 times during Newcastle’s title-winning campaign of 2016/17. In doing so, Gayle became the first player since Alan Shearer in 2003/04 to score 20+ league goals for Newcastle in a single season.

Gayle’s link up play would also help to get the best out of some of the other attacking talents at Darren Moore’s disposal.

Transfermarkt value Gayle at £9 million, and whilst Transfermarkt consider Rondon to be worth £11.7 million, if this swap deal goes through then West Brom have likely gotten the better end of the bargain.
