Jonathan Gould raved about Alisson to West Brom

West Bromwich Albion had the chance to sign a player who is considered to be one of the best goalkeepers in the game.

According to a report by The Sun, Jonathan Gould saw Alisson in action for AS Roma 18 months ago whilst on a scouting mission for Tony Pulis’ side.

The former goalkeeper revealed he was in Spain to watch a striker that the manager had instructed him to take a closer look at, however, the Brazilian shot-stopper was the one to catch his eye.

Gould had told The Sun: “I was in Villarreal for Tony Pulis, who was Albion boss at the time.

“It was hard to take my eyes off Roma’s young goalie, who had been brought in as a surprise replacement for Wojciech Szczesny.

“Tony had sent me to do a scouting report on Villarreal’s French striker Cedric Bakambu, who was playing against Roma in the Europa League.

“But I came back raving about Alisson – the guy who kept defying him!

“Alisson hadn’t played many games for Roma and I didn’t know who he was.

“He had just signed from Brazilian club Internacional and was seen as the understudy to Szczesny.

“Yet his performance that night convinced me he was destined for the very top.”

The Verdict:

West Brom may have noticed him a long time before anybody else had, however, it would surely have been difficult to bring him to the Hawthorns.

The goalkeeper, who cost Liverpool £67million this summer, had only just been at Roma for a short time and would have been looking at cementing his place in the Serie A side, something he proved to be successful in doing.

The Baggies will not want to look back on this as a missed opportunity, but rather a story of a player that could have been at the club a little while ago.
