West Bromich Albion have conjured up an erratic set of results in their first 5 fixtures of the Championship season which make it almost impossible to predict how their campaign will pan out, but there is no doubt they have shown enough potential to suggest a promotion push is on the cards.
The Baggies are notorious experts in the art of winning promotion and under the leadership of Darren Moore there is a growing feeling of optimism at the Hawthorns, even if a handful of players are still edging for transfers away from the club.
For example, Nacer Chadli has long been the subject of speculation linking him with a move away from the club and yet he remains a West Brom employee.
However, according to a recent report from the BBC, Monaco are in the process of completing a £10 million deal to secure Chadli’s services following months of speculation regarding his future.
Time is running out for Chadli to complete a transfer but the possibility of him remaining at the Hawthorns now seems incredibly unlikely.
The news arrives as a great shame as certain sections of the Baggies fan base would have been contemplating the possibility of seeing Chadli reintegrate into the first-team this season, and that could have worked in the club’s favour as they bid to clinch promotion.
Although Chadli’s reputation has been tarnished by his insistence on holding out for a transfer, there is no doubt that he possesses a level of technical quality which is vastly superior to that of the majority of Championship standard players.
His creativity, guile and composure in the final-third would certainly have boosted West Brom’s potency in the final-third as his individual brilliance would have also stimulated plenty of improvement in the attacking players around him.
Even if the supporters are feeling bitter about the saga they would have been able to put those feelings to one side and rallied in support of Chadli in the event that he remained at West Brom.
The playmaker’s reportedly imminent departure has felt inevitable for the entirety of the summer window but his last minute transfer to Ligue 1 should still be regarded as a blow to the club’s promotion ambitions.
