Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are toasting their ales in honour of John Terry, who has announced he will leave the west London club at the end of the season.
The Blues confirmed the news via their official website yesterday and although the captain centre-half is currently the club’s most decorated player, he’s barely featured since Antonio Conte took the managerial hot seat last summer.
Indeed, Terry’s last start in the Premier League came during a 2-2 draw with Swansea City in September, and with his contract due to expire at the end of the season, the 36-year-old has decided to call time on his glistening Chelsea career.
However, Terry has revealed he’s eager to carry on playing and according to Mirror Football, that will see January admirers West Brom ‘lead the charge’ to sign the former England skipper during the coming transfer window.
The Baggies reportedly wanted to sign in January but Terry decided to stay on at Stamford Bridge to be part of Chelsea’s Premier League title bid and Tony Pulis has already hinted he’ll revive his interest in the summer.
As quoted by Mirror Football, the Hawthorns gaffer said last month; “In January he wanted to stay with Chelsea. If he becomes available in the summer, we’ll sit down and have a little think about what we’ve got and what we haven’t got and we’ll take it from there.”
It’s further added that a big-money move to the MLS seems unlikely for Terry. The American top flight is now looking towards younger players who can develop in the league, whilst their ‘Designated Player’ salaries are reserved almost exclusively for attackers.
