West Bromwich Albion prepare to face Birmingham City this evening at St Andrews for a fixture which the Baggies faithful will be expecting to win.
The hosts have started the season in miserable form with 4 draws and 2 defeats from their opening 6 fixtures, whilst Darren Moore’s side have showcased their potential to mount a promotion bid by claiming 10 points from 6, including a thumping 7-1 victory over QPR.
Spearheaded by an attacking partnership compromising of Jay Rodriguez and Dwight Gayle, West Brom certainly possess the firepower to finish inside the top-six at the very least.
Indeed, Gayle is something of a Championship goal-machine with 39 goals and 11 assists from 66 appearances at this level, including 3 goals and 3 assists from 5 matches in this season alone.
With Gayle in the side there’s no doubt that the supporters have reason to be optimistic for the season ahead, and Sky Sports pundit David Prutton is of the opinion that he could make all the difference this evening.
Prutton delivered his pre-match predictions ahead of the return of the Championship this weekend and he tipped Gayle to set West Brom on their way to a 2-0 victory by notching the opening goal.
Based on Gayle’s start to the new season it’s certainly difficult to argue with Prutton’s prediction and the player himself will certainly be looking to combine with Rodriguez to great effect this evening.
With the poachers instinct to complement his willingness to run in behind, Gayle will fancy his chances of getting on the scoresheet once again but he will need to discover his best form against a Birmingham defensive unit whom have kept 2 clean sheets from their opening 3 matches.
Despite Birmingham’s solid defensive record, the fact Gayle has scored 3 times in his 2 previous appearances against the Blues suggests Gary Monk has plenty to fear.
