According to transfer expert Alan Dixon, via The Bristol Post, West Brom are planning on signing versatile Leeds man Kalvin Phillips.
This is only dependent on whether Leeds fail to earn promotion and The Baggies do, as the 23-year-old has clearly set his sights on playing in the Premier League.
Phillips has been marvellous for The Whites so far this season, as he has been deployed as both a central midfielder and a centre-back by manager Marcelo Bielsa. It is this ability that would make him a sensational signing at The Hawthorns.
While West Brom currently have a large stock of central midfielders, they are either in their thirties- Gareth Barry and Chris Brunt- or very young- Sam Field. Only Jake Livermore is player that straddles the two generations at the age of 28. Additionally, manager Darren Moore adopts a style whereby he expects his defenders to be comfortable with the ball at his feet- something that fans believe Kyle Bartley and Craig Dawson are not. Therefore, Phillips is a player that can ease both of these problems.
He could play as a centre-back and facilitate Moore’s style of football, whilst also moving into the midfield from time to time to balance the workload of the older figures at the club, in what would be a perfect move.
The trouble with this deal is that it looks like it will be made at the end of the season depending on Leeds’ and West Brom’s standing in the Championship. However, West Brom ideally need this player now to seriously improve their side and continue their push for promotion. If there is any way that the club can fast-track this deal, they must.
