Rodwell began his professional career with Everton, his boyhood club, and enjoyed his best playing days at Goodison Park. Now a free agent, after difficult stints with Manchester City and Sunderland, Rodwell is once again training at Finch Farm.
However, it is reported that Everton are not going to offer the 27-year-old a contract. Nor, it would seem, are Watford, who Rodwell spent some time on trial with earlier in the summer.
It is unlikely that Rodwell will find many suitors in the top flight, and will probably end up playing Championship football next season.
He could still have a big impact in the second tier though, and West Brom would be wise to bring the England international in during this transfer window.
West Brom’s squad has been severely depleted this summer following the club’s relegation from the Premier League last season. The exits of Claudio Yacob, James Morrison and Grzegorz Krychowiak have left the Baggies thin on the ground in the centre of the park.
Rodwell, who will be desperate to prove his doubters wrong, could bring some much needed energy and attacking impetus to this area of the pitch.
If Darren Moore could get Rodwell back to his best then the midfielder has the ability to light up the Hawthorns. With the Premier League winner available on a free transfer, the Baggies should gamble on Rodwell’s quality, if they can agree a fair wage deal with him. Especially when they so desperately need cover for their midfield.
