The West Ham United fans have been feeling increasingly positive in the Transfer Tavern of late due to their side’s impressive form in the Premier League and, recent reports have given them further reason to feel optimistic about the future.
David Moyes’ side have moved clear of the relegation zone after taking 4 points from their last two games in the Premier League, but their survival is far from secure just yet. A victory over Stoke City on Monday evening would all but secure their place in the top-flight next season, so it’s no surprise our resident Hammers faithful are already drinking for dutch courage here in the tavern.
However, it appears that the hierarchy at West Ham are already certain their club will survive this year, as the Daily Mirror believe they are interested in signing Barcelona’s wantaway midfielder Andre Gomes this summer, although they face competition from Tottenham Hotspur for his signature.
Gomes’ struggle at Barcelona has been well documented in the British media this season, so reports concerning his departure are hardly surprising. The Portuguese international has only made 5 starts in La Liga all season and just 1 in the Champions League.
Only last month Gomes described his time at Barcelona as “a kind of hell” during an interview with Paneka Magazine (Via the Independent), so he should certainly be open to the prospect of embarking on a new challenge this summer. West Ham have been desperately short of options in midfield this season due to injury problems and a general lack of depth in that position, so Gomes’ arrival would enable the club to rectify a nagging problem.
Considering Gomes has struggled to deal with the pressure which arrives as a consequence of playing for a club of Barcelona’s stature, West Ham would be a perfect place for Gomes to kick-start his career. The 24-year-old would provide a level of creativity and technical brilliance in midfield that the Hammers cannot currently claim to have and his arrival would also enable the club to compete for a top-six finish next season.
Central-midfield is an area which West Ham need to prioritise in the transfer market this summer, so the supporters should be hoping that the club can pull off a huge deal to bring Gomes to the London Stadium next summer.
