West Ham deal for 33-year-old edges closer

The West Ham fans in the Transfer Tavern would love to see him at the London Stadium…

The Dimitri Payet-saga has brought down the moods of most of the Hammers in the Transfer Tavern, with their marquee midfielder likely set for a January departure – but it isn’t all bad news for Slaven Bilic’s side.

According to Sky Sports, West Ham are edging closer to a deal for Southampton defender Jose Fonte – with talks reportedly at an ‘advanced stage’.

With Jose Fonte recently handing in a transfer request at St Mary’s, a deal for the Portuguese defender always seemed likely – though the Hammers have only recently emerged as a potential destination for the defender.

In recent weeks the likes of Everton and Man Utd have been touted with a move for Fonte, but it would appear as though West Ham have been the first side to make a move for the talented defender.

Fonte has been with Southampton since 2010, and has been a key figure in the Saints’ rise back to the top of the pile in English football. A defensive stalwart with outstanding leadership qualities, Fonte has been vital since his arrival, and his seemingly impending departure will come as a huge blow to the Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern.

The West Ham fans would be delighted to see him join, given how poor their side has been defensively.  With 35 goals conceded this season, a change was certainly needed.
