West Ham edge closer to move for top Moyes target, could make switch in January – report

The West Ham fans in the Transfer Tavern are feeling hopeful following the arrival of David Moyes. The Scotsman is looking to rebuild his reputation, whilst also improving West Ham’s spot in the Premier League. He’s certainly on his way to doing both at present, with a few good results coming to the London Stadium since he moved to the club.

It’s been an impressive start, given that the team was built by his predecessor Slaven Bilic. Come January, though, Moyes will get a chance to bring in a few of his own players, and according to ESPN, he’s already working to that end.

ESPN report that West Ham are ‘closing in’ on a move for Swansea City defender Alfie Mawson, who has been a shining light for the disappointing Swans this term. Moyes is said to have made the defender his top target for January, with the Scotsman clearly viewing the West Ham defence as an area needing improvement.

It’s no real surprise, of course, given that their -16 goal difference is one of the worst records in the Premier League. They’ve really struggled at the back this term, with Joe Hart, in particular, looking poor, and the arrival of Mawson will certainly serve to improve their fortunes.

They’ll have to wait until January for this deal to be finalised, but it’s quickly beginning to look like a matter of when, rather than if.

Landlord’s Verdict

Mawson isn’t a standout name in the Premier League, but he’s certainly a decent option.

Offering defensive solidity, the centre-half will add some much-needed steel to an otherwise poor defence. The mooted £20 million plus fee is a sizeable amount, but you can’t exactly put a price on avoiding relegation.

West Ham desperately need a bit more depth and quality at the back, and it’s tough to dispute the sentiment that Mawson would make things somewhat better.
