West Ham United have had an outstanding transfer window where Manuel Pellegrini has been able to land a number of impressive targets for his new-look side.
The Chilean is determined to turn the Hammers into a competitive force in the Premier League and make them into a side capable of challenging for European football, whilst also playing in an attractive way.
The London Stadium outfit have already welcomed the arrivals of Jack Wilshere, Andriy Yarmolenko and Felipe Anderson, however, it appears that Pellegrini is now fully focused on bringing a striker to the fold.
According to a report by Bild, West Ham have placed themselves into the race with Newcastle United for Mainz’s Yoshinori Muto, with the Bundesliga outfit keen to sell the Japan international as he has just one year left on his current contract.
The striker, who featured for his country during the World Cup, has a decent record in the German top-flight and could prove to be impressive if he were given the chance in the Premier League.
Muto would be a smart addition for West Ham as they are yet to bring a striker to the London Stadium this summer.
The Hammers had to rely on goals from Marko Arnuatovic last season, with the Austrian being the only player to reach double figures, and with his future appearing to be in the balance, Pellegrini must act.
With the current contract situation surrounding the Japanese forward, Mainz may be prepared to sell Muto for a cut-price deal, and given the creativity already in the side, it could be seen as a bargain deal should he find his feet quickly.
