West Ham eyeing swoop for another Championship defender

biliccc09West Ham fans around the Transfer Tavern have stopped their game of pool to read an article in the Times which suggests that their side are looking to recruit yet another defender from the Championship.

The Hammers signed Aaron Cresswell from Ipswich last season, who has impressed in the Premier League.

Now, having secured the signing of Leeds United star Sam Byram, Slaven Bilic’s men have now been linked with a move for Reading centre back Jake Cooper.

Cooper broke into the Royals’ first team last season and has since become a standout player in Brian McDermott’s side, making 21 first team appearances.

The amount that Cooper would cost the Hammers is not certain, but with the club nearing their wage budget, it seems more likely that a deal would be completed in the summer.

However, a deal to take Cooper to Upton Park could be agreed this month, before loaning him back to Reading until the end of the season. The young defender has also represented England at U18 and U19 level.

West Ham fans, would you like to see a young player like Cooper come in to your side? Let us know in the comments below!
