Celtic and West Ham supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern in recent days, what with the Bhoys losing 7-1 at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday night, while the Hammers were beaten 2-0 by Watford on Sunday in David Moyes’ first game in charge.
Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic were never expected to take anything from their encounter at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night, but they did take an early lead through Moussa Dembele to give them a glimmer of hope. However, that only served to rile Unai Emery’s side as they then bagged seven unanswered goals to take their aggregate against the Scottish champions to 13-1 in the group stages, and thus maintain their position at the top of Group B. Whereas West Ham embarked on a new era under Moyes with an all too familiar sense of disappointment as goals from Will Hughes and Richarlison secured a deserved 2-0 win for Marco Silva’s Watford on Sunday, thus keeping the Hammers in the Premier League’s bottom three.
Thus, there have been many despondent Celtic and West Ham fans in the Tavern this week, and the mood of the latter is hardly going to improve if a recent report from the print edition of Wednesday’s L’Equipe (via HITC) is anything to go by.
And that’s because they report that the Hammers failed with a swoop for Celtic ace Dembele over the summer.
The influential 21-year-old only moved to Celtic Park back in 2016 after impressing at Championship side Fulham, and he went from strength to strength last season with 32 goals in just 49 games for Rodgers’ side, helping them to the clean sweep of domestic honours.
And his incredible goal-scoring form reportedly attracted the attention of several clubs over the summer, not least West Ham, who reportedly showed ‘concrete interest’ in the France Under-21 international as they sought to bolster their attacking ranks.
And with Dembele likely to go on to bigger and better things in years to come, that will surely feel like an opportunity missed for the East London outfit.
Landlord’s verdict: Moussa Dembele played a pivotal role in helping Celtic win all three domestic trophies last season, with his 32 goals in 49 games a sensational record and one that sets him up for a huge future in the game.
And the 21-year-old was reportedly on the radar of several teams over the summer, with West Ham one side who reportedly expressed an interest in landing the Frenchman, only for no deal to materialise.
And with David Moyes’ men having managed just 11 goals in their 12 Premier League games thus far, it’s a deal they could well have done with completing in a bid to aid them in their battle against relegation.
