West Ham fans on Twitter aren’t having it that Jose Fonte should have stuck around

West Ham fans on Twitter aren’t having it that Jose Fonte should have stuck around - Ligue 1

West Ham fans are getting so sick of their defensive woes. Manuel Pellegrini’s side still has a soft touch at the back, as we saw against Chelsea with Eden Hazard’s opener. However, one Hammer has claimed that Jose Fonte should never have been sold after he scored in a 5-1 win over PSG for Lille on Sunday and it’s been quickly shot down.

The Portuguese defender made his West Ham exit around 14 months ago when he signed for Dalian Yifang for a fee of £5 million. The Irons have had some seriously poor centre-halves over the years, and whilst Fonte is a more than respectable Premier League defender having made a reputation for himself at Southampton, his days in London were poor, even if he’s playing superbly in Ligue 1 this season.

After leaving the London Stadium in February 2018, the Portuguese defender only lasted a matter of months in China. His debut, alongside Yannick Carrasco, saw him lose 8-0 and give away a penalty, and it’s understandable that after that he made his first dash for the exit door. His second move of 2018 worked out much better too, as he’s now proven himself as one of the top defenders in Ligue 1, helping Lille to an impressive 2nd as they go into the final run in.

You can read the Hammers’ thoughts on Fonte here:

The Irons have nothing against Fonte, but in his West Ham days he was well off the pace and looked shoddy whenever he played, leaving bad memories for the supporters.
