West Ham United could certainly do with making some defensive reinforcements in the summer. The Hammers do not have many reliable options available to them if one (or some) of their first-team stars are made unavailable for whatever reason due to their lack of depth.
And, it appears those concerns are in the mind of Manuel Pellegrini, as he looks to address those issues in the summer with what could potentially be an excellent coup for the London Stadium outfit.
What’s the News?
Football.London are claiming West Ham are firming up their interest in Guillermo Maripan this summer as they look to bolster their defensive backline.
Mario Husillos, the club’s director of football, and Pellegrini are understood to want to bring in younger players that can help the team over the long-term future and see the centre-back as one of those men that fits the bill perfectly.
West Ham could certainly do with adding some reinforcements to their defensive line and Maripan could be an excellent acquisition in the summer if they are able to get a deal done.
The Alaves defender has been impressive for the La Liga outfit this season as they challenged for a place within European football next year, whilst the correlation regarding his recent injury and their dip in form only goes to further highlight how good he is.
Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena have both been excellent for the Hammers in their debut years at the London Stadium, however, there are not too many options available to the Irons if the duo were to suffer injuries or be made unavailable because of suspension.
Angelo Ogbonna has been solid recently, however, performances can leave plenty to be desired at times as he looks rather fragile whilst Winston Reid does not appear to able to win his battle with injuries, leaving his career at the club firmly in the balance this summer.
And, the idea that Husillos and Pellegrini have about spending a little bit more for a younger player with plenty of quality makes complete business sense and is something that West Ham should certainly start to look at doing more often.
Having splashed out large fees for the likes of Javier Hernandez and Andriy Yarmolenko in recent transfer windows, they might prove to be good purchases for a limited time, however, there is no return on investment for the club and that could then become rather costly. This move, then, may make more sense.
