West Ham supporters in the Transfer Tavern were pretty happy to see the end of 2017 given that their side entered the New Year in the Premier League’s bottom three, although they will know that victory over fellow strugglers West Brom this evening will move them out of the relegation zone.
David Moyes’ men fell into the relegation mire courtesy of Bournemouth’s 2-1 success over Everton on December 30, just a few days after the Cherries salvaged a point from their clash with the Hammers following Callum Wilson’s last-gasp equaliser in a 3-3 draw at the Vitality Stadium. And although the East London outfit are in the bottom three, a run of just one defeat in five games has given our resident West Ham fans hope that their team have enough to avoid the drop, although games against fellow strugglers like this evening’s against West Brom will play a huge part in their survival quest.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for those West Ham fans lining up at the bar to get their teeth into, not least a recent report from The Sun which suggests that defender Reece Oxford has been subject of a £10 million bid from Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach.
The 19-year-old spent the first half of the campaign on loan at the German club before being recalled late on in December, having managed just four appearances for the club in an ultimately frustrating spell in Germany.
However, Monchengladbach clearly rate the young defender as reports suggest that they have launched a £10 million bid for the England youth international, in the hope of bolstering their defensive ranks heading into the second half of the Bundesliga campaign.
And with manager Moyes reportedly wanting experienced players to get his team out of the mire in 2018, the Hammers board face a huge decision as to whether or not to retain Oxford’s services for the rest of the season and beyond.
Landlord’s verdict: Reece Oxford was struggling for first team football at Borussia Monchengladbach in the first half of the season, with just four appearances to show for his efforts.
Nonetheless, the Bundesliga outfit clearly want to land the 19-year-old as reports suggest that they launched a £10 million bid for the versatile star on New Year’s Day, just a few days after he was recalled by West Ham manager David Moyes.
But with the Scot reportedly seeking experienced players to help with his team’s relegation fight, Oxford faces an uncertain future at the London Stadium, leaving the West Ham board with a huge decision to make as to whether to accept Monchengladbach’s bid for the Englishman.
