West Ham United have acted upon their alleged interest in Club America’s Edson Alvarez and have tabled a bid, according to a report by Record.
The Hammers are believed to have submitted an offer 15% lower than Wolves for the defender who has just played a key role in helping his country lift the Gold Cup this summer (Fox Sports).
It is claimed the Irons have offered the Mexican outfit $11million (£8.8m) for their 21-year-old star, however, it is thought to be an offer lower than Premier League rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers, who have offered $13m (£10.4m).
Ajax are also thought to be in the race for Alvarez, however, their chances appear to be slim despite the player’s preference to join them as they cannot stump up the transfer fee Club America want.
West Ham could be in real trouble of missing out on Alvarez this summer, especially if Wolves have made a bigger bid. Earlier reports by Record (via Sport Witness) have suggested that the highest bidder will win the 21-year-old’s signature, with Club America wanting a transfer fee of around $17million (£13.6m) for him.
A versatile defender, the 21-year-old could be someone too good to miss out on for Manuel Pellegrini’s side this summer as well. As Transfermarkt points out, he can play almost everywhere across the backline and as a defensive midfielder – a position that has had Viva Liga MX waxing lyrical because of his tackling and passing abilities.
According to the stats recorded by WhoScored (who only collected data from his involvement in last year’s World Cup, international friendlies and the 2019 Gold Cup), it is clear to see he can make an impact and could potentially offer West Ham an option in front of the defence.
Averaging 1.8 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per 90 mins, Alvarez was better than Pedro Obiang (1.7 and 0.5 respectively) and could become a long-term partner for 20-year-old Declan Rice in the future (2.9 and 1.5 respectively).
With Wolves looking set to be in pole position because of the highest offer, it might just be worth West Ham upping the ante and increasing their bid a little to ensure they have a chance of signing the young defender.
