West Ham supporters have been slightly downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side lose to Arsenal in the Carabao Cup, yet their team’s recent Premier League form has many in good spirits ahead of today’s clash with struggling Newcastle United.
David Moyes’ side may well have gone down 1-0 to the Gunners on Tuesday night, but two wins and a draw in their last three league clashes has seen the Hammers move out of the bottom three to the dizzy heights of 15th. And those victories over Chelsea and Stoke City, as well as a hard-fought draw at home to Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal, has increased the optimism around the London Stadium, so much so that several of our resident West Ham fans are confident heading into their clash with third-bottom Newcastle this afternoon.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for those Hammers supporters lining up at the bar to get their teeth into, not least recent reports from Ladbrokes which suggest that they are in pole position to land influential Swansea City defender Alfie Mawson.
The 23-year-old has impressed in the heart of the Swans backline since his introduction into the first team at the start of 2017, scoring some timely goals for the South Wales outfit in the second half of last season to help them preserve their top-flight status.
And although things aren’t going as well for Swansea this term, Mawson continues to shine, so much so that he has been linked with a move away in the upcoming January transfer window, with West Ham one side thought to be interested.
And it’s the Hammers who are heading the chase for the Englishman according to Ladbrokes, with Moyes’ men 6/4 to secure a deal for the centre-back in January, ahead of Sam Allardyce’s Everton at 4/1, and Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace at 5/1.
But whether the East London outfit are indeed able to get a deal done for the influential ace next month remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: It’s been a tricky year for Swansea City, yet Alfie Mawson’s efforts at the heart of their backline have certainly been one of a few shining lights from their 2017.
The 23-year-old broke into the side at the start of the year and has since gone from strength to strength, to the point that several fellow Premier League clubs are keeping tabs on his progress ahead of a possible move in January.
And with the East London outfit showing some defensive frailties this term, it’s a deal they could well look to strike next month.
