West Ham in race for Nicolo Barella

West Ham United spent big in the summer transfer window to try and improve their side and it appears Manuel Pellegrini could look to do the same in the winter.

According to a report by Calciomercato, the Hammers sent scouts to Italy last weekend to watch Nicolo Barella in action for Cagliari.

West Ham were not the only Premier League club said to have been watching the creative midfielder, with the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United and Everton all thought to have had officials in attendance.

Barella has been impressive for the Sardinian outfit and the 21-year-old is considered to be one of the Serie A side’s best players.

The Hammers added Felipe Anderson, Jack Wilshere and Carlos Sanchez to their midfield, however, Pellegrini could look to further add to his ranks especially with the injuries his side have already picked up.

Wilshere and Sanchez have already been sidelined with concerns since joining the Hammers, which could force the Chilean manager into the transfer market this winter.

The Verdict:

It remains to be seen if Pellegrini will have the financial backing to make a move for Barella in January, considering he spent almost £100million on players in the summer.

It is believed the creative midfielder could cost them in the region of 40million to prise him away and they would be involved in a tough battle to convince him to come to the London Stadium should the other Premier League sides make offers.

However, Pellegrini has been able to add a number of attractive options already and Barella would certainly go a long way in helping the Hammers to improve in an area where they have been lacking that attacking intent.
