Whilst performances away from the London Stadium are something that still needs work on at West Ham United, bringing in a striker is also something that needs to be made a priority for Manuel Pellegrini’s side.
The Hammers may already have a number of options to choose from when it comes to players in the final third, however, none of them have been consistent enough this season to make a solid impression.
And, it appears the club may have turned to Italy to find someone who could change all of that in the summer.
What’s the News?
According to a report by Calciomercato, West Ham are said to be ‘enthralled’ by Genoa’s Christian Kouame.
The media outlet claims that the Hammers will send an official to watch the 21-year-old in action at the weekend when the Serie A outfit take on Sampdoria in a fierce derby encounter.
However, it is also stated that the Premier League side would have to pay at least €25million (£21.5m) to sign a player who wants to give something important back to the club who believed in him originally.
Kouame’s debut season with Genoa could not really have gone a lot better than it has as he has managed to register four goals and seven assists in his 31 Serie A matches so far.
The 21-year-old could be perfect for West Ham, as he has an excellent combination of power and pace that could terrify Premier League defences and make him a real handful to deal with in the penalty box. The Ivorian likes to run directly at the backline and is more than capable of dribbling with the ball at his feet.
Blessed with aerial power as well, he could be an excellent option for the Hammers’ playmakers and wingers when it comes down to putting in crosses into the box as he wins a number of battles in the air, something the Irons’ current crop of attackers have struggled with this season.
Kouame definitely has the potential to be a star in the English game, however, £21.5m for a 21-year-old could be considered a risky move and a lot of money for West Ham to spend on a player who still has room to develop and perfect his game.
If the Premier League side continue to be ‘enthralled’ with him and like what they see at the weekend when they watch him in action, then they could look to try and bring Genoa’s asking price down a tad.
West Ham fans, does Kouame appear to be an attractive option for the club? Do you think he could solve the attacking woes, or do you think it would be too big of a risk to spend that amount of money on him? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
