The West Ham fans are desperate for their side to sign a few players this month…
After a poor first half of the season, things can only get better for the Hammers. With the club no longer in the Europa League or FA Cup, Slaven Bilic can pump all of his resources into the Premier League – with a top half finish the minimum that will be expected of the London side.
Given that the Hammers have had such a poor start to the season, it will come as no surprise to see that Bilic is keen to bring in a few players this month – and he reportedly has his eye on one of the Premier League’s most in-demand defenders.
According to the Sun, West Ham have made a surprise £4 million move for Southampton stalwart Jose Fonte, who looks likely to depart the club this month. Any deal will be difficult to come by, though, with both Crystal Palace and Everton also reportedly keen.
As per the BBC, he has handed in a transfer request – and with Claude Puel excluding him from the Southampton squad over the last few weeks, a departure is looking increasingly likely.
Whilst Fonte’s inevitable departure has disappointed the Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern, the West Ham fans in attendance are absolutely delighted with the news. Whilst he is currently 33-years-old and nearing the end of his career, West Ham need a short-term fix to their disappointing defence – and he could be perfect.
Strong, comfortable with the ball at his feet whilst also maintaining an aerial threat – Fonte is undoubtedly one of the Premier League’s finest defenders.
Our landlord thinks that a pairing of Fonte and Reid could be unstoppable this season…
