According to ESPN, Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen has been given the all clear to find a new club and punters in the Transfer Tavern have been weighing up his options.
The former Arsenal player spent last season on loan at Roma but was unfortunately hampered by injury.
However, when he’s fit and on form, Vermaelen is a great defender that would fit in at most clubs.
Due to his age and injury track record, it’s unlike that any of last season’s top seven sides in the Premier League would be interest in signing him.
However, our landlord feels that for the right price he would be a decent and realistic signing for West Ham, Leicester City or even Southampton.
The latter side could be about to wave goodbye to Virgil Van Dijk who is consistently being linked with a move away and if he does go, Vermaelen would be a good replacement.
While any of the newly promoted sides would also be keen in signing him, our landlord thinks the chances of him wanting to go to one of those clubs is very unlikely.
Given Bournemouth’s spending on Nathan Ake recently as well, it’s unlikely they would be willing splash even more cash.
Having played for Ajax, Arsenal, Roma and Barcelona he has a very impressive career record and combined with his 58 Belgium caps, the 31-year-old would look the part in most defensive lines.
Admittedly it’s risky signing an injury prone player but he’s a solid defender that most clubs should be interested in.
