West Ham made an offer to Hatem Ben Arfa

West Ham United looked to bring a former Premier League player back to England earlier this summer as Manuel Pellegrini rebuilt his squad.

According to a report by L’Equipe, Hatem Ben Arfa was offered the chance to return to England’s top-flight with the Hammers.

However, it is believed that the former Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United winger could decide to remain in France with the likes of Rennes doing all they can to convince him to join them.

Interest in the 31-year-old has not been short, with Rayo Vallecano and Sporting Lisbon all thought to have considered a move, although the one by West Ham comes as a surprise.

The Hammers have already added a number of attacking options this summer and have splashed the cash on the likes of Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko to try and get the Irons playing exciting football.

Pellegrini has found life tough so far in his early days at the London Stadium and is yet to pick up a point in the Premier League.

The Verdict:

With Ben Arfa being a free agent, it could have been a viable option for West Ham this summer.

However, he comes with his inconsistencies and would have made a potential deal a significant risk as you do not tend to know what type of player will turn up on the day.

The France international fell out of favour with PSG and there will always be a chance that he does something at his next employer, so clubs would do well to steer clear of a potential headache.
