The West Ham fans in the Transfer Tavern have mixed opinions on their season so far…
Currently sat in 15th place in the Premier League, a win against Swansea City at the weekend has certainly improved things somewhat, but they’re still far from where they need to be.
The Hammers have definitely moved backwards over the last 18 months or so, and under Slaven Bilic, something is clearly missing.
One of West Ham’s summer signings has had his say on what he thinks that ‘thing’ is, and he has put it down to a lack of creativity. Speaking to the Daily Star, Zabaleta said: “I think what we are missing at some points in the game is that creativity that you need to create chances, to keep the ball”.
He added: “Sometimes we play so quickly that we gave the ball away so this is something we need to improve”.
Zabaleta goes on to namecheck Manuel Lanzini as perhaps the only player within the squad that has that uncanny ability to create, and that’s certainly a tough sentiment to disagree with. The Argentine has looked good this term, but some of his creative midfield partners – not so much.
In truth, the Hammers have lacked that creative spark since the departure of Dimitri Payet, who supplied so many goals for the club during his stint in London.
This is an area that wasn’t upgraded much over the summer, and whilst they have a number of top forwards, the likes of Andy Carroll and Javier Hernandez aren’t going to be able to score without being set up creatively.
Slaven Bilic clearly has a talented side, but at present, he looks like he’s a few pieces away from a complete puzzle.
His one saving grace is his attacking line, notably Javier Hernandez, and if he can improve the players behind the Mexican, then he can be relied upon to score frequently this term.
As Zabaleta notes, though, a lack of creativity in the squad could make that difficult.
