West Ham United have been offered the chance to sign Olympique de Marseille’s Florian Thuavin this summer, according to Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solehkol.
Javier Hernandez has been touted as part of any potential deal, as the Mexico international could get the departure he has already talked about getting this summer, although the Hammers would still need to part with a significant amount of cash if they want the French midfielder.
“We’ve been told this evening, they’ve been offered the chance to sign Florian Thauvin from Marseille, he is a wide player who can also play through the middle and he is valued at about £50million by Marseille,” said Solhekol on Sky Sports News (19:28, Tuesday, July 9th) (via Forever West Ham).
“He scored 16 times in the French league last season, Marseille need to sell players as they missed out on European competition, they’ve got players like Dimitri Payet, Kevin Strootman who they’re also willing to listen to offers.
“What we’re being told at the moment, that the deal being proposed by intermediaries to West Ham, is that West Ham would pay €40million (£35.7million) to Marseille for Thauvin and also send Javier Hernandez to Marseille as part of the deal.”
Thauvin could be a good addition at the London Stadium this summer as he appears to have found his feet after a rather miserable spell with Newcastle United the last time he played in the Premier League. His experience with the Magpies left plenty to be desired, as he recorded just one goal and two assists in his six months at St. James’ Park and subsequently returned to Marseille.
However, his time at the Orange Vélodrome has proved to be extremely fruitful, as he has a fine return of 78 goals and 50 assists in his 235 appearances (Transfermarkt).
His stats for last season’s Ligue One campaign (per WhoScored) are also something to admire, as he managed an average of 3.1 shots and 1.4 key passes per match recording 16 goals and 8 assists in the process; a better average than Marko Arnautovic (2.2 and 1.3 respectively).
According to Transfermarkt, the France international played as a centre-forward three times for Marseille last season and bagged a hat-trick against then-16th placed Amiens, whilst providing an assist in the two other fixtures.
