West Ham must beat Wolves to £16.2m-rated international to solve club problem

The West Ham United fans in the Transfer Tavern have been disappointed by the inconsistency of Joe Hart since he joined the club from Manchester City at the beginning of the season.

The career of Joe Hart has been on a downward spiral during the past few seasons and his recent attempt at reviving his dwindling reputation at The London Stadium has been an unsuccessful venture thus far. The 31-year-old goalkeeper has shown glimpses of his former self by springing across his goal-line to produce outrageous saves of the highest quality, but unfortunately those moments are tarnished by costly errors which are unacceptable for a player of his standing.

Hart’s failure to build a consistent run of form has rather reluctantly forced the Hammers faithful propping up our bar to call for his departure this summer. The City goalkeeper is only on loan, but it seems the supporters would prefer the club to avoid making a permanent bid for his services in the summer.

However, recent reports from the Daily Express suggest that the club would prefer to sign Hart’s England rival, namely Jack Butland (valued at £16.2 million by Transfermarkt) of Stoke City. If the Potters are relegated this season then Butland will certainly be available at a cut-price deal, although West Ham will face competition from both Liverpool and newly-promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers for his signature according to the report.

The decision to sign Butland over Hart would certainly be a wise call based on the form of both goalkeepers during recent years. Butland is far from the finished article and has been guilty of making the occasional grave error of his own, but he is 6 years younger than Hart and still learning his trade at the highest level, so that is to be expected.

Hart has had plenty of chances to prove himself, but he has continuously failed to stamp out the errors which have plagued his reputation in recent years, and until he manages to install consistency back into his game the Hammers should avoid making a permanent bid for him.

It’s clear that West Ham have a problem with regard to their goalkeeper situation; Adrian is unlikely to be pleased with sharing goalkeeping responsibilities with Hart this season, whilst the England international’s form has been unsatisfactory, so the club must land Butland this summer to finally put an end to a glaring issue in East London.
