West Ham fans in the Transfer Tavern are excited for next season after Manuel Pellegrini was appointed as their new manager.
Our regulars believe they can challenge for a European place under the former Manchester City boss. Pellegrini lifted the Premier League title during his time with the Citizens and broke the record for the most goals scored in a Premier League season. He made Fulham defender, Ryan Fredericks, his first signing as West Ham manager.
A defensive midfielder will be a priority for the Chilean in the summer window. In previous windows, the Hammers have been linked with Sporting Lisbon midfielder – William Carvalho. A move for the Portugal international collapsed after a fall out between the two boards.
Instead, West Ham should attempt to sign Anderlecht dynamo – Leander Dendoncker. Valued at £15.3m by Transfermarkt, the Belgian international is one of Europe’s hottest prospects. He made 44 appearances in all competitions last season, including six in the UEFA Champions League.
Primarily a defensive midfielder, Dendoncker could also play at centre-back, making him a useful rotation option. He is an excellent defender, averaging 1.7 tackles and 2.5 interceptions per game last season (WhoScored). As well as his defensive prowess, Dendoncker is brilliant at spraying long balls, averaging 3.3 per game last campaign.
The youngster is not the finished article but has the potential to be world-class. A commanding presence in midfield, he would have no issues in adapting to the physicality of the Premier League. The Anderlecht youth graduate is the midfield lynchpin West Ham have been crying out for.
