The West Ham fans in the Transfer Tavern are getting increasingly frustrated about the Dimitri Payet saga…
With Marseille reportedly in a standoff with the Hammers over the transfer fee involved in any potential sale, the West Ham fans in the Transfer Tavern think that their side just needs to sell up – and we completely agree.
After all, what are West Ham really going to gain from this situation? Is it a case of principle? Of course, West Ham don’t want to be seen to be bowing to player pressure and give in Payet’s demands – but there comes a time in which they simply need to draw a line.
Is it a case of money? If reports are to be believed, the Hammers are wanting somewhere north of £30 million for Payet, whilst Marseille are only willing to offer £25 million. At 29-years-old, Payet’s value is only going to go down – and if you base his value off of his performances this season, then he seems over priced even at £25 million.
Payet is, simply put, never going to play for West Ham United ever again. On a basic level, keeping him when he isn’t playing is a waste of money – as not only is he costing the club in wages, but his value is also decreasing with every week that he sits on the bench.
Let’s say West Ham refuse to sell below their asking price, what happens next? Most likely, Marseille will offer slightly less in the summer, to which the Hammers will have no choice but to accept. It isn’t like his contract expires soon – the Hammers can’t just let him rot for 5 years!
What’s more, you also have to consider the effect that Payet could be having in the dressing room at the London Stadium. West Ham struggled earlier in the season, and could the bad morale stemming from the Payet saga go on to effect results on the pitch? Time will tell, but that is a genuine risk for Bilic.
In short, there is simply no benefit to holding Payet against his will. It is only going to cost West Ham more money in the long run, whilst his retention could also cause issues amongst the playing staff. Brady and co will need to swallow their pride a little bit, but at this point – they have little choice.
