Ask most West Ham United fans here at The Transfer Tavern what they need in the team next season and they will tell you that it’s a prolific striker that can lead the line for the Hammers and bang in the goals.
Irons supporters had to suffer a fairly calamitous season in front of goal this year with only the injury-prone Andy Carroll really offering anything to shout about in the position.
You’d fancy a key transfer priority of Slaven Bilic this summer would be attracting an elite striker to the club, someone who can be their talisman and fire them up the table in the European qualification positions.
One such man Bilic is said to be targeting is Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud, a man who certainly knows his way to go despite never really being relied upon by Arsene Wenger.
That’s according to The Daily Mirror anyway, who say the £20m-rated forward is determined not play second fiddle to anyone at the Emirates Stadium next season.
The report also suggests Giroud is target for Marseille and clubs in Italy but that the Hammers are confident of keeping him in London.
It would certainly prove to be an interesting transfer. While Giroud might not be fancied as first choice at the Gunners, his goalscoring record is actually very good. He scored 16 goals this season alone in all competitions despite his limited play time. That’s part of a 98 goal haul in total for the club.
What do you think West Ham fans? Is Giroud good enough to get you excited about the season ahead or are you looking for Bilic to sign a better calibre of striker?
