West Ham haven’t had the best of summers so far and looking at their fixtures after the international break, it may continue.
Following the break, West Ham will face Everton, Chelsea, West Ham and Tottenham in their next six fixtures. With no points on the board so far in the league, that’s a pretty daunting run of fixtures for Manuel Pellegrini.
The Chilean was heavily backed in the summer as the club brought in nine new players, two of those being midfielders. Jack Wilshere was signed on a free while they also brought former Aston Villa man, Carlos Sanchez back to the Premier League. Neither, however, have looked amazing at the base of Pellegrini’s although in fairness, nor has Mark Noble.
West Ham didn’t buy anyone who has the physical presence to play at the base while also being able to burst forward. It may seem controversial considering his current club but West Ham should be looking at Ruben Loftus-Cheek come January.
Maurizio Sarri has recently praised the midfielder but it remains to be seen whether the Loftus-Cheek will be able to displace Jorginho, Kante and Kovacic.
Such is Loftus-Cheek’s physical stature, that there’s definitely potential for him to play further back in midfield. Technically his ability is superb and he is very comfortable taking the ball in tight areas.
Signing the youngster would also allow Pellegrini to push Wilshere further forward and play in that 10 role that the former Arsenal man is so good in. Pellegrini would have to play Obiang next to Loftus-Cheek but it definitely could be a shrewd piece of business to sign the £16.2 million-rated midfielder in January.
