The West Ham United fans in the Transfer Tavern are feeling nervous about the prospect of relegation this season, but they believe they should have enough quality within their ranks to secure survival this season.
The Hammers took a small step closer to ensuring their survival this season by claiming a 1-1 draw against Stoke City at the London Stadium on Monday evening. Now that they are just 5 points away from the 40-point mark with 5 fixtures left to play, it seems that West Ham will manage to beat the drop this season, but nothing is guaranteed at this moment in time.
Providing David Moyes manages to keep his side in the top-flight, West Ham will need to make a handful of new acquisitions this summer in order to ensure they are vastly improved during the next campaign. One type of player the club need to target is those who possess flair and creativity in the final-third as they have been overly reliant on Marko Arnautovic to provide a spark since Moyes took over in November.
With that being said, West Ham should consider making a bid for Man City’s attacking midfielder Patrick Roberts this summer. Roberts arrive at the Etihad Stadium with a beaming reputation following his transfer from Fulham in the summer of 2015, but he has spent the majority of his career on loan at Celtic since he made the switch.
However, after more than two years in the SPFL, it’s likely that Roberts will be keen to embark on a new challenge this summer, but he is unlikely to find much by way of opportunity within a star-studded City squad. The door should firmly be open for the England U20 prospect to depart City and kick-start his career in English football, so West Ham should do everything they can to sign him from the Citizens.
Roberts is a left-footed right-winger who prefers to drift in from the flank and influence the game through the centre of the pitch and, he has managed to do that to devastating effect for Celtic on multiple occasions throughout his spell with the club.
The 21-year-old still has plenty of improving to do, but he already has plenty of experience of playing regular first-team football in Scotland and in the Champions League, so he should have no problem settling into West Ham next season and making an instant impact.
West Ham cannot continue to rely on Arnautovic next season if they wish to avoid another relegation battle, so the club should make a bid to sign Roberts from Man City in the summer whether it be on a season-long loan or a permanent deal.
