The West Ham United fans are feeling positive about their club’s future under Manuel Pellegrini as the Chilean appears to be adopting an ambitious approach to the summer transfer window.
The early stages of Pellegrini’s reign at the London Stadium have been dominated by transfer rumours which link his club with moves for plenty of midfield and attacking players, but thus far the goalkeeping conundrum has gone under the radar somewhat. Joe Hart’s return to his parent club Manchester City has left Adrian as the number one goalkeeper for the moment, but with doubts looming over his long-term future it might be time for the club to consider alternative options.
Meanwhile, Liverpool seem desperate to replace Lorius Karius after his nightmare performance in the Champions League final which effectively cost them the greatest prize in European football. According to a report from the German media outlet Bild, Liverpool are interested in signing Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen this summer in a deal which would set them back 25 million euros (£22 million).
If that report proves to be true then Liverpool would be set to secure a bargain acquisition in the current economic climate, and his arrival would also pave the way for Karius to embark on a new challenge. After his Champions League performance it’s unlikely that he will be able to attract a move to another elite club, even with his reported concussion to consider.
With that in mind, West Ham should make a bid to secure his services in the summer to solve their goalkeeping problem with a quality acquisition. Naturally, goalkeepers are remembered for their mistakes, especially when they happen on a stage as high as a cup final.
However, Karius’ performances towards the end of the previous campaign were consistently of a very high standard, so two blunders should not cloud people’s judgement when assessing his potential to succeed in the Premier League.
The German stopper has plenty to learn, but he possesses lightning quick reflexes which are difficult to teach at any level of the game, so with extra focus in training on his concentration he should develop into one of the Premier League’s best in the years to come.
He might not be the supporters choice after his recent blunders, but that should not deter Pellegrini from bringing him to the London Stadium if Liverpool are successful in their pursuit of Leno.
