West Ham to continue move for Nathaniel Clyne despite Pablo Zabaleta contract - Premier League

West Ham United may have extended Pablo Zabaleta’s contract at the London Stadium for another season, however, it does not appear as though that has stopped them from continuing their search for a new right-back.

The Hammers confirmed earlier this week that the Argentine had put pen-to-paper over a one-year extension, but the latest claims appear to suggest that they are still in the hunt for another experienced, but younger, international to fill the position.

What’s the News?

West Ham still plan to go ahead with their pursuit of landing Nathaniel Clyne this summer, despite Zabaleta’s new deal, according to Football Insider.

The Hammers are keen to strengthen the right-hand side of their defence and see the 28-year-old as an ideal candidate to accomplish that aim.

Liverpool are said to be prepared to offload the England international, although it is likely going to cost West Ham north of the £10million mark.

The Verdict:

Although having Zabaleta stick around the club’s dressing room for another year can be interpreted as a very good thing, potentially bringing Clyne to the London Stadium would have to be considered as something West Ham must simply do.

The Argentine is on his last legs at the moment and it would hardly be a surprise if the club decided they wanted to keep him with them because of his leadership qualities and what he can offer to others in terms of the experience he has.

In stark contrast, Clyne is reaching his prime years as a footballer and has started to show just what he is capable of doing once again with his performances for Bournemouth this season after injuries robbed him of huge amounts of action.

The England international is quicker, more skilful and also more inclined to get further forward up the pitch than Zabaleta at times, which would certainly be a welcomed addition to a side that adopts Pellegrini’s attacking style of play.

Ryan Fredericks may feel aggrieved if Clyne were to join them as he has started to come into his own in recent weeks, however, he is not quite up to Premier League standard at the moment and might actually benefit from having the Liverpool man around.
