The narrative surrounding West Ham United and their need for a new striker will not go away any time soon as it is clearly an area the club have failed to rectify for a significant period of time.
David Gold and David Sullivan have had 45 different men try and solve their woes in front of goal during their time as owners of the Hammers, however, it appears they could be about to go all out for their 46th man and one who could finally to complete the riddle.
What’s the News?
According to the Daily Mirror (28 March, page 56, via HITC Sport), West Ham are understood to have stepped up their interest in Maxi Gomez.
It is claimed the Hammers will offer the Celta Vigo striker wages of £80,000-a-week to try and lure him to the London Stadium.
Gomez could certainly be the man that finally solves the problems and provides West Ham with a regular source of goals as they look to continue their quest to improve in the Premier League.
The Uruguay international has been in fine form for the La Liga outfit over the past two seasons, having hit 17 goals with them in his debut campaign and has chipped in with nine so far in what has been a really challenging year for Celta.
With the club facing the real possibility of being relegated, it would not be a surprise to see the 22-year-old leave and West Ham must seriously look at finally trying to land their man.
Gomez has plenty of technical ability to offer and is the type of player who could thrive in the tactical system that Manuel Pellegrini currently employs at the London Stadium. With one striker being used up top, the Uruguayan is able to hold the ball up and allow for his team-mates to join in with the attack, whilst he has the physical and aerial traits to make him a handful in the penalty area.
£80,000-a-week may be a hefty figure to add to the wage bill, however, with a number of players believed to be offloaded in the summer and the fact that Gomez may have his release clause halved if Celta Vigo are relegated, then it might not appear as expensive as it is.
West Ham fans, do you think £80,000-a-week will be enough to convince Gomez to join you at the London Stadium? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
