According to recent reports, West Ham United could land Olympique Lyon defender Marcelo on a free transfer next summer.
The report by The Sun claims that Marcelo, who the Hammers almost signed for £20million in the January transfer window, is ‘keen for a fresh start in the Premier League’.
And, with the £2.7 million-rated centre-back’s contract set to expire in the summer, David Moyes’ side could land the Brazilian on a free transfer.
Since moving to Lyon from Besiktas in what was a £6.3 million deal back in 2017, Marcelo has gone on to feature 141 times for the French side, chipping in with five goals and providing two assists along the way.
So far this season, the defender has featured in all but one of Lyon’s 14 Ligue 1 fixtures, over which he has made an average of 1.5 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 3.6 clearances per game, culminating in an impressive WhoScored match rating of 6.98 – ranking him as the club’s seventh-best performer in the French top flight.
Do you think that Marcelo would be a good signing for West Ham?
Transfer Tavern Take
Despite the fact that Marcelo has impressed this term for Lyon, the defender’s advancing years mean that there is not a great deal of longevity behind any potential move from West Ham.
However, if the defender is available on a free, perhaps he could offer Moyes’ side one or two years of defensive cover and experience for relatively little outlay, and saving £20m from what would have been a January 2020 move would certainly be clever business from the Hammers.
