West Ham United: Kevin Phillips says it would be ‘smart’ to sell Andriy Yarmolenko - Premier League

Speaking recently to Football Insider, former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips stated his belief that West Ham United would be ‘smart’ to sell Andriy Yarmolenko in the January transfer window.

Since arriving at West Ham from Borussia Dortmund in what was an £18 million deal back in 2018, Yarmolenko has gone on to feature 41 times for the Hammers, chipping in with nine goals and providing five assists along the way.

What year were West Ham originally founded?

However, the £6.75 million-rated 31-year-old has been hampered by injury over his time in east London, with a ruptured Achilles tendon keeping him out for 252 days in the 2018/19 season, a tear in the abductor muscle keeping him out for 66 days in the 2019/20 season and a positive coronavirus test keeping him out for 21 days in the 2020/21 season.

So far this term, even when fit, the Ukraine international has found game time hard to come by under David Moyes, playing a total of just 97 minutes of Premier League football, which led to Phillips, speaking recently to Football Insider, to call for the club to move the winger on in the January transfer window.

He said: “I definitely think it would be a smart move to sell Yarmolenko. He has not played an awful lot of football and as one of the top earners at West Ham, if I am the owner, I would be looking to move him on.

“I am sure the owners will look at that because he is not playing regularly. It could even free up the money to sign a couple of players. It is a difficult situation but I think West Ham will try to offload him in January if they can.”

Considering the fact that Yarmolenko is reported to be earning a whopping £115k per week at West Ham, it is hardly surprising to hear that Phillips believes the player should be moved on in January, particularly as the 31-year-old does not appear to be central to Moyes’ plans.

And, with around 18 months left on his contract in east London, if the club wish to recoup as large a part of the £18 million they paid for him back in 2018, it would indeed be wise to sell the winger sooner rather than later.
