West Ham United ponder swoop for Saints star

lambert.jpgThere is news here in the Football Transfer Tavern that has West Ham United fans shaking their heads. The Sun claim that the Hammers will turn down the chance to sign Andy Carroll on a permanent basis and turn their attentions to another forward instead.

Carroll of course has been on loan at the East London club for the entire 2012/13 campaign after failing to impress at Liverpool following that big money move from Newcastle. The forward has been way short in terms of his goal haul but is slowly starting to build his reputation back up with better all-round performances after a disastrous time at Anfield.

Carroll of course will have to return to Brendan Rodgers’ club should West Ham refuse to buy him permanently. To land Carroll it would cost not only a massive outlay of £17 million but also large wages which would cost around £84,000 per week. Allardyce feels that the forward is not worthy of such expenditure and as a result has instead turned his attentions to Southampton’s Rickie Lambert.

The impressive forward would be available for around £6 million and Southampton could well look to sell the player should they go down in order to raise some funds. Add to this the fact that they would struggle to keep hold of him should relegation occur and Allardyce feels he is in with a shot of landing the former Bristol Rovers hitman.

Will Allardyce plump for Lambert instead of Carroll in the summer? Rate this rumour below.
