West Ham United supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern were split by reports which claimed Joey Barton was set to become the club’s latest summer signing, however the Mirror are now reporting the deal is off after supporters protests.
The Hammers had been close to agreeing a deal with the 32-year-old, who is a free agent after being released from QPR following their relegation to the Championship.
Barton was one of the few to emerge from Loftus Road with any credit last term, yet that has not convinced the majority of West Ham supporters, who have let it be known they do not want the former Manchester City and Newcastle midfielder signing on at Upton Park.
A club insider said on Tuesday night: “We’ve pulled out in the last hour because of the strength of feeling from the fans.
“He’s a good player and based on football decisions we’d have signed him, but in the interests of team spirit we haven’t.”
A group of West Ham fans all congregated near the pool table here in the Transfer Tavern are glad this deal hasn’t materialised, with all of them admitting it would be a major step in the wrong direction!
