The Newcastle United fans who are gathered at the bar in The Transfer Tavern this evening are discussing reports that one of their players could be a subject of interest this summer.
The Telegraph is reporting that Southampton and West Ham United are ready to trigger Andros Townsend’s release clause should Newcastle United be relegated at the end of the season.
Townsend has played a major part in Newcastle’s revival in recent weeks and those performances are attracting many rival teams in the Premier League.
The winger only joined the club in January from Tottenham for £12 million, but he had a clause inserted into his contract with the club that he could leave for £8 million should the club be relegated at the end of the season.
Both West Ham and Southampton are on the lookout for a pacy winger and feel that Townsend would be an ideal choice to bring into their respective squads for next season.
The Newcastle fans in The Tavern are not surprised by the clause and are sure that others will follow should the club be relegated this season!
