Roberto spoke to West Ham United’s official channels after making his debut the club’s 2-0 Carabao Cup win against Newport County, revealing he is happy with how it went.
The Spaniard signed for the Hammers on a free transfer in the summer, alongside David Martin, with the pair coming in to replace Adrian.
The fact Roberto was picked ahead of Martin indicates he is ahead of him in the pecking order, meaning he is the club’s main cup ‘keeper and back-up for Lukasz Fabianski.
“I hope to keep the same rhythm, along with all of us, in this competition as it will help the team for Premier League games as well. It’s always good to win with a clean sheet, of course.
“Tonight was a good night for us and now we’ll get ready for Saturday.
“Jack’s goal just before half-time to go 1-0 up was important. They press high and were very strong in defence for the first 45 minutes.”
Roberto was given a rating of 7.8 by SofaScore for his performance against Newport, which was only bettered by Felipe Anderson.
He made a total of 4 saves, 1 punch, 2 high claims and 1 clearance throughout the match, while also winning all three of his aerial duels.
His biggest moment of the game came in the first half – when the score was still 0-0 – as he made a save with his legs to keep out Padraig Amond’s shot from point-blank range, before collecting the ball after, as shown in the highlights video on the Sky Sports Football Youtube channel.
It is always good for a goalkeeper to get a clean-sheet on their debut, no matter the circumstances or opponent.
He looked steady throughout the game and didn’t give any reason to doubt his credentials, though he will be tested more as the Hammers come up against better teams with more prolific finishers.
