West Ham United set to land Liverpool ace

stewart-downing-wigan-620There is news breaking in the Football Transfer Tavern today that Liverpool winger Stewart Downing has agreed to join West Ham United in a £5 million deal, subject to a medical, according to BBC Sport.

The Reds midfielder, who joined the Anfield club in a £20 million transfer from Aston Villa back in 2011, has been in talks with Sam Allardyce over the weekend after he was told he could leave Merseyside by Brendan Rodgers.

Downing has now reportedly decided to make the switch to Upton Park in the pursuit of regular football.

Downing had successfully fought his way back into Rodgers’ first team plans with some improved performances last season, after earlier being informed that he was surplus to requirements following a massively disappointing first season at the club.

However after the summer arrival of Iago Aspas in a £7.7 million deal for Celta Vigo,  Downing’s departure was always expected with Rodgers keen to bolster funds and clear the club’s wage bill ahead of further transfers.

The former Middlesbrough man made 91 appearances for the Reds, scoring seven goals in the process and has collected 34 caps for the England national team since his debut in 2005.

The 29-year-old will now join up with former Reds team-mate Andy Carroll who joined the Hammers for a club record £15 million deal earlier this summer as Allardyce tries to recreate the partnership Kenny Dalglish orignally put together at Anfield with limited success.

Should Liverpool really be making a £15 million loss on the England international? Let us know your thoughts below.
